Slip-joint couplings connect the tailpiece, the main parts of a drain trap, and a short threaded nipple at a tee in the drainpipe. At the wall or the back of the cabinet, a trim piece called an escutcheon hides the connector and the nipple. Waste water exits through the trap and down the vented drainpipe to the main stack.
A sink trap is a J-shaped pipe beneath a sink, designed to trap noxious sewer gases before they enter the house. Clean the outside of the copper pipe using the emery cloth. The pipe must be free of all dirt and oxidation for the solder to properly bond to the copper.
The clean area must extend at least one inch beyond the shut-off valve. Clean the inside of the shut-off vale with the copper fitting brush.
Coat the outside of the copper pipe and the inside of the shut-off valve with a liberal coating of the flux paste. Remove the flame and apply the solder to the mating edges of the valve and pipe. The solder will melt, flowing around and in between the valve and pipe. The solder is sucked into the joint by capillary action, and a properly soldered joint will appear a bright silvery color.

If the joint appears a dull gray, you have a bad joint and need to make the solder joint over again to eliminate the possibility of leaks. Let the newly soldered joint cool down completely before proceeding. Connect one end of the flex line to the threaded outlet on the shut-off valve. Do not over-tighten the compression nut.
